Homemade Whole-wheat Crackers

This homemade whole wheat cracker recipe is a great alternative for the super-processed store-bought kind. My kids love all kinds of crackers, you name it, they love them. For years we would go through a box or two a week as they snacked on them.

When we started to cut out processed foods from our diet, I realized that I had to find a replacement for these crackers. The ingredients list on those crackers definitely didn’t meet my standards for real food. Based on our old way of thinking I thought I was actually feeding them something healthy because they were whole wheat!! Ha! Ha! They were barely whole wheat and so full of words I couldn’t pronounce!!

Cracker switch story

When we switched to real food I stopped buying them and all I heard was complaints from my kids about how hungry they were and that the fruit and veggies were not filling enough. They wanted something crunchy to snack on. We started having popcorn and rice cakes but I needed to add variety to their snack menu.  I wanted to find a whole wheat cracker version that would be healthier.

I began my search with a healthy version of saltines. My online search only came up with a few options. However, I did come up with a recipe for homemade tortilla chips that are a good crunchy snack but I wanted a cracker to replace the old kind.   There was a lot of different recipes that I tried and they were good, but not easy enough to make. They just took too long.

Sorry, I am busy and I can’t spend all day in the kitchen, so I needed a fast homemade whole wheat cracker that tasted good. I really came up empty-handed with my search I couldn’t find a homemade whole wheat cracker that I liked.

Cracker dilemma solved

I found one recipe that I liked but it called for white flour. I ended up just coming up with my own recipe because I couldn’t find one that tasted good.  It took a lot of changes to the recipe here and there and a lot of failed tries to make them just right.  However,  I finally came up with the perfect whole wheat crackers recipe!

My kids love these crackers and I really think they are the best homemade whole wheat cracker recipe out there!!! They are so yummy!!!  My family loves them so much that I make them once a week and sometimes twice.

Easy to make

Don’t get overwhelmed! These homemade whole wheat crackers are so easy to make! I can have the dough made in less than 5 minutes and have the first batch in the oven in 15 minutes!!! While the first batch is cooking I will roll out all the other bathes on cookie sheets or parchment paper and set them aside until it is time to cook them. It probably takes me about 30 minutes to get them all rolled out.

You have got to try these!! It only takes an extra 30 minutes out of your day and while they cook you can get other things done. It has just become part of my weekly routine to make these homemade whole wheat crackers.

Homemade Whole Wheat Crackers

  • 4 c. flour
  • ½ c. coconut oil ( I do ¼ c. of olive oil and ¼ c. of coconut oil)
  • 1 ½ c water
  • 2 t. salt

In a bowl, mix together the whole wheat flour and salt. Add in the oil and water.

Mix well; Separate dough into 5 sections roll into balls.  In this picture, I had cut the recipe in half so I only have 3 dough balls.

Roll out dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.  You can just roll it out on a greased baking sheet also.  Roll out the dough so it is thin, it needs to be really, really thin, we love to use our new Wooden Pizza Roller.  Roll it thinner than you think you can, so it fills almost the whole baking sheet if you can.

Biscuits (Premium Packaging)

Add whatever topping you would like. (Italian seasoning, Garlic salt, Parmesan cheese, Basil) Shake a little salt on top and lightly roll the topping into the dough.

In the above picture, I used Kirkland no salt seasoning.  It tasted good but some of the spices were burned during cooking so you will have to watch for that and cook a little less.

Using a pizza cutter cut into cracker shapes.

Dot the crackers with a fork

Directions

Bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes check and turn the cookie sheet around and bake for another 3 minutes or until lightly brown.  Watch them carefully because they will brown really fast at the end and burn. Let them cool on a cooling rack for at least 30 minutes. Crackers “crisp up” as they cool.

While the crackers are cooking I will roll out the rest of the batches in the cookie sheets. If you don’t have enough cookie sheets then roll a dough batch on parchment paper and then just transfer to the cookie sheet.

Store in an airtight container for  1 week. (if you can get them to last that long)

I promise you won’t be disappointed with these crackers.  You will never buy a boxed cracker from the store again!!! I hope you enjoy these homemade whole wheat crackers as much as we do!!

Happy Baking!!
